The RSV season is about to begin!

STIKO recommends RSV immunization for all infants in their first year of life. This is a passive vaccination with an antibody that is administered once in the thigh at the beginning of the RSV season. This “vaccination” is very well tolerated, is reimbursed by health insurance, and has significantly reduced the frequency of RSV infections and associated hospitalizations.

Start of immunization with nirsevimab for births between April and September 2025

Infants born between April 1 and September 30, 2025, should receive their nirsevimab immunization starting in early October 2025. The vaccine will be administered by pediatricians in private practice.

Immunization with nirsevimab for births between October 2025 and March 2026

For all infants born between October 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, nirsevimab immunization is recommended starting October 1, 2025. Ideally, it should be administered immediately after birth as part of the U2 checkup at the maternity clinic. Alternatively, it should be administered by a pediatrician between the U2 and U3 checkups.

Start of immunization with nirsevimab for at-risk children in their second RSV season

For at-risk children (e.g., premature babies or children with chronic underlying conditions), nirsevimab prophylaxis is also planned for their second RSV season, also starting in early October 2025, at the earliest in mid-September 2025.

The one-time vaccination is also recommended (and covered by health insurance) for adults aged 60 and over with underlying medical conditions, as well as for all older people aged 75 and over.
